Des is an accessibility and assistive technology consultant. He provides
usability and accessibility solutions to small businesses in South East
England. Born and educated in Sussex, he has worked in many locations including
the Bahamas, USA and even the Shetland Islands. He recently gained an MPhil
in Human Computer Interaction at Brighton University, and has had several
peer reviewed papers published on interaction issues.
His family has been involved with technology since the turn of the 20th
century. His great grandfather, Edgar Thomas Larner, was one of the pioneers
of radio and television and a friend of both Philo Farnsworth & John Logie
Baird. Des is particularly interested in the work of Nikola Tesla, and of
Nobel Prize winner Frederick Soddy who was educated at Eastbourne College
and did much of his work at home in Bolton Road, Eastbourne.
In addition to science and technology, Des' interests include cricket (he
was made a Lord's Taverner in 1990 for services to disabled sport) and the
British Paralympic Association. He is also the Press & Publicity officer
for the Catenian Association Province 18.
