A talk about digital signatures and encryption: What are they? Why do we use them?
How do they work? Colin Tuckley, a chartered engineer with a BSc (Hons)
degree in computer science, presented an overview of the subject.
The emphasis was on how digital signatures and encryption applies
to email. Colin, who has a keen interest in this topic, outlined some
practical systems in current usage.
11/10/06 The Top 5 Insider Attacks
Peter Wood, Chief of Operations, First Base Technologies
Over the past decade, Peter Wood and his team at First Base Technologies have
conducted numerous network penetration tests (to simulate hacker attacks)
and audits for some of the largest organisations in the UK. During
this extended period they have found clear evidence that most networks
share the same five common vulnerabilities, all of which could be
negated by good planning and a reasonable level of security awareness.
Each of these vulnerabilities was discussed in this presentation and
illustrated by real-world examples, with suggestions for ways to minimise
your exposure to attack. A PDF
version of this presentation is available.
04/10/06 Harveys Brewery Tour
Arranged by Desmond Boksan-Cullen, BCS Sussex
Founded in 1790, Harveys has been brewing in Lewes for two centuries.
It is the oldest independent brewery in Sussex and still brewing traditional
beers. Tours are conducted 'after hours' and are limited. Consequently a
two year waiting list is typical. After a couple of years we finally got
to the top of the list. It was well worth the wait. This social evening
was a relaxed opportunity to gain an appreciation of the brewing process,
as well as a chance to sample the products!
17/05/06 Professionalism in IT and Branch AGM
Charles Hughes, President of the BCS
The BCS intends to make IT the profession of the 21st Century. To achieve
this goal the Society launched an industry-wide programme to define
and significantly raise the level of professionalism in users, suppliers
and contractors - indeed everyone who works in IT. Charles, as sponsor
of the programme, described its objectives, and its importance and
relevance to everyone in the BCS.
12/04/06 Information Hiding
Derrick Grover, Consultant
Steganography, the stuff of espionage and secret writing, is recorded from early
history. Whilst cryptography is visible and declares itself to be
a secret, steganography is hidden so that a censor does not even know
it is there. Numerous methods have been devised and the challenge
is to modify data is such a way that the method is not detectable.
In addition to secret communication the methods impinge on computer
security; proof of authorship; copyright protection and plausible
deniability of secret data held on a system. A PDF
version of this presentation is available.
15/03/06 Understanding IT complexity
David Cuthbertson, Square Mile Systems Ltd
David talked about the techniques you can you use to understand IT complexity.
Often systems go live without proper analysis of dependencies and
have to be rolled back, much to the embarrassment of the IT department
and business sponsor. This talk was to help you avoid major system
crashes during upgrades. A PDF
version of this presentation is available.
15/02/06 Captioning and Semiotic Analysis in
Digital Television
Desmond Boksan-Cullen, BCS Sussex
This talk was kindly given by Desmond in place of a speaker who cancelled at short
notice. Desmond talked about the enhancement of television closed
captioning for deafened and hard of hearing people. He showed a prototype
of his intriguing "Tiles" system, which adopts a semiotic approach
in the design of iconic symbolism and closed captioning. A PDF
version of the presentation is available.
