Notes For Speakers
This page contains guidance notes for prospective speakers at our public
meetings.
Our public meetings take place in an informal atmosphere. Speakers usually
wear smart but casual clothes to give a relaxed feel to their presentations.
Nonetheless, talks should be pitched at a level suitable for professionals.
To appeal to a wide audience, we suggest that your talk is engaging and
informative, but not overly technical. It is difficult to predict the size
of an audience, but we typically get between 20 and 40 attendees at our
events.
Our meetings usually take place on a Wednesday evening in the Chichester
1 Lecture Theatre at the University
of Sussex. Doors open at 7pm. See our directions
page for a map and details of how to get there. The lecture theatre
is the circular building in the middle of the map.
Presentations normally start at 7:30pm. Experience shows that it is preferable
to keep your talk to within an hour, and allow a few minutes at the end
for a question-and-answer session. Where speakers are co-presenting talks,
the duration of each talk should be reduced accordingly. We must vacate
the premises by 9pm.
A complimentary buffet is provided in the lobby of the lecture theatre
from 7pm during which we greet everyone. This affords an opportunity
to check the venue and its facilities, and prepare any equipment that
you need. A PC-based overhead projector, PA system and dimmable lighting
are available for your use in the lecture theatre. You can bring your
own laptop or use the networked computer under the podium desk to
connect to the overhead projector.
There is restricted car parking outside the lecture theatre but, unless
you have special needs or are carrying heavy equipment, it is just
a short walk from any of the campus car parks. Parking is free on
the campus after 6pm.
We offer a payment of £50 to our speakers. For talks that are given
by more than one speaker, this payment is to be shared between the co-presenters. |
